Choose three anchors

Keep the order more consistent than the clock.

  • Close: dim lights, end exciting play and put away screens
  • Care: bathroom, teeth, pajamas and needed medicine as directed
  • Connect: one book, one song, a short chat or the same goodnight phrase

Make a minimum version

For late nights, decide the routine that takes ten minutes: bathroom, teeth, pajamas, one short connection and lights out. A minimum routine preserves the signal without turning a late evening into an even later one.

Move adult decisions earlier

Choose pajamas, water cups, comfort items and tomorrow's first task before everyone is exhausted. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that predictable nighttime rituals can include reading, conversation and songs, while exciting play is better avoided close to bedtime.
