Make three loose groups

Aim for variety, not perfect categories.

  • Building or creating
  • Pretend or character play
  • Puzzles, games or movement

Put one group away

Use any opaque container, a closet shelf or an under-bed bin. Keep favorite comfort items available. Store safely and secure furniture or heavy containers to prevent tipping and climbing hazards.

Rotate when play goes stale

There is no mandatory weekly schedule. Swap a few items when cleanup feels impossible, children stop noticing what is available or you need a change of pace.

Use the return test

When a toy comes back after a break, notice whether anyone chooses it. If it is ignored through two rotations, it may be ready to donate, sell or leave the system.
