Use the four-part formula

Choose one protein, one produce item, one carbohydrate and one fun extra. You do not need a perfect rainbow or matching wooden board.

  • Protein: cheese, yogurt, hummus, eggs or leftover chicken
  • Produce: berries, orange slices, cucumber or steamed peas
  • Carbohydrate: crackers, toast, pita or a mini waffle
  • Fun extra: olives, a dip, popcorn for older children or two cookies

Make one board for everybody

Offer shared foods family-style, then let each person build a plate. Cut food appropriately for each child's age and avoid known choking hazards for young children.

Keep a backup shelf

Choose three pantry items and two refrigerator items that can always become snack dinner. When the week goes sideways, the decision is already made.
