What the mental load actually is
The mental load is the ongoing work of noticing, remembering, planning and following up. It is not only doing the task. It is being the person who knows the task exists.
That is why a short list can feel heavy: every line may contain five invisible decisions.
Signs your brain is overloaded
Overload often looks like irritability, forgetfulness, decision fatigue or lying awake while tomorrow’s logistics parade through your mind.
- You cannot fully relax because you might forget something
- Small requests feel surprisingly enormous
- You are the default keeper of dates, sizes and supplies
- You finish one task and immediately scan for the next
A five-minute reset
Write every open loop without organizing it first. Then mark only what truly needs attention today. Assign a person where possible and let the rest live safely outside your memory.
A brain dump does not finish the chores. It stops your brain from rehearsing all of them at once.
