Notice the routing pattern
Default-parent work includes being interrupted, knowing context, translating instructions and deciding what happens next. The constant switching can be exhausting even when each request looks small.
- Children ask you while another capable adult is present
- Other adults wait for assignments
- You know the status of nearly every family task
- Rest is interrupted by questions only you are expected to answer
Transfer a whole lane
Choose one recurring responsibility and transfer the noticing, decisions, supplies, execution and follow-up. Examples include school lunches, sports logistics, laundry or one child's appointments.
Create direct routes
Let children ask the responsible person. Put shared information where everyone can see it. Resist answering questions that now belong to another owner when the situation is not urgent.
Treat burnout as information
Persistent exhaustion, hopelessness, anxiety or changes in functioning deserve support from a qualified health professional. Practical systems can reduce load, but they are not a substitute for care when you need it.
